Microsoft is consistently expanding Microsoft Purview into the central hub for data security in the Microsoft 365 ecosystem. One important step: the Data Loss Prevention (DLP) capabilities from Microsoft Defender for Cloud Apps (MDA) are being consolidated into Purview.
What is changing
- Consolidation: DLP policies for cloud apps will run centrally through Purview instead of being maintained separately in MDA.
- Retirement date: The DLP capabilities within Defender for Cloud Apps will be switched off on December 31, 2026.
- One rule set instead of two: Instead of maintaining policies in two tools, classification, protective measures, and reporting will come together in Purview.
Why this is becoming urgent now
Companies that currently use MDA for DLP in cloud applications should migrate their existing policies to Purview well before the retirement date – including a check that all previous protective measures and exceptions are mapped correctly there.
